Forget Online Privacy, I Want You To Find Me

social bouncing around photoIt came to my mind that I may have gone a bit overboard with the multitude of social media profiles I have created. I’m writing this post to make it easier for you to add me to your network on any of the mentioned social media sites we may have in common. Plus, next time someone asks me for my profile URL to a certain site, I’ll just send them this post instead of looking up the URL :)

Contrary to popular belief, I do have a life outside work and the internet. Because of that, a lot of my profiles are just sitting there. I may use them sparingly, and I may not use some of them at all, but they are there should I choose to become more involved. I’m very much active within some, and you’ll find me constantly updating content and participating. Either way, hit me up so we can network, share interesting stuff and contribute to a more relevant, semantic web.

Peace and Happiness!

Hi

One of your clients (Katrina) passed your blog over to me…

The privacy issue is segmented now into trying to maintain separation between personal and professional. It is a really tough thing - especially for marketers.

For myself, I had been trying to keep Facebook family and friends only - however with Pages and so many marketing ops there, I quickly crumbled. Now my professional contacts are mixed with my blacksheep.

Perhaps this is what begins to break the paradigm that separates “business me” with “personal me”. May not be a bad thing.

How timely! I actually woke up this morning thinking of how many of my “profiles” I want to put in the sidebar of my next site design. I have a stack, but actually use about four or five. Of those, perhaps two or three are the best ways to do any real networking with me. Propdave’s comment about crumbling comes to mind. :-)

urbandictionary.com word of the day: Web shy

Unwillingness to expose one’s thoughts, feelings or identity on the web, knowing that doing so means freaknobs from Baton Rouge to Bangladesh will know everything about you.

“Jeez, Paul–you need to get with it! You should create your own web site, post your picture, do some blogging about your beliefs, and generally trumpet yourself and your innermost thoughts via that there Internet.”

“You kidding me? I am waaaaaaaay too web shy for any of that!”

I think you are just a slut on the interweb :) :) :) :) :)

Great post.

Hahaha, love the previous comment. Webslut! That’s sad because that’s exactly what I am, and no, I don’t even have a life besides work and web… hehe. What about your mycreep and your stalkbook?? You keep these for your close friends and family?

Comment by Sebastien — April 25, 2008 @ 5:03 pm

@sebastien Mycreep and Stalkbook LOL! Thats pretty good, did you come up with that?

Comment by New Media Zoo — April 26, 2008 @ 7:56 pm

@New Media Zoo - yes I did come up with it but someone thought about it before me as both URLs are already taken. While I don’t have much against myspace (except it could be much better but oh well…), I think FaceBook is very very creepy. I always expect someone to jump at me from my computer screen and stab me in the neck. FaceBook definitely is “a place for stalkers”!

Comment by Sebastien — April 27, 2008 @ 10:43 am

@Sebastien agree all the way. I have a profile on stalkbook but I haven’t even added a photo. All my friends keep adding me but I just dont do anything with it. I am usually all over the social web but I just don’t like the idea of everyone knowing EVERYTHING that I do. As an international man of mystery, I have to have some secrets so I can maintain my desirability :) By the way, it is 91.3°F / 32.9°C where I am. Scorching hot!

Comment by New Media Zoo — April 27, 2008 @ 11:06 am

@MediaZoo - where are you? I was driving in San Diego 1 hour ago and my car said it was 99°F outside!!

Comment by Sebastien — April 27, 2008 @ 11:21 am

I cant tell you, I might have them space hookers invading my zone! :D

Comment by New Media Zoo — April 27, 2008 @ 9:04 pm

@newmediazoo - too late I already know you’re in AL. Gotta love online limited privacy!

Comment by Sebastien — April 28, 2008 @ 8:37 am

@Sebastien Dam you gypsy! We will be at Dini’s tomorrow for happy hour if you want to join us.

What is the SEO Survivor?

  • The SEO Survivor is a blog created by Ricardo Figueiredo, a Search Engine Optimization and Internet Marketing Specialist who works for one of the top Internet Marketing Companies in the country.
  • The name SEO Survivor started as a thought that in order to be successful with Search Engine Optimization and Internet Marketing in general, one can't just wave a certificate, or a college degree and say: "I know how to do this". Not to say that certificates and degrees aren't important, they are. The point here is that in order to be successful in this field one needs to be always learning, and excited about the biz. One needs to have "survival" instincts to stay ahead of the curve in this industry... I developed this blog so I can share my ideas and views with you, and so you can share yours back with me. Hopefully we can learn from each other and thrive in today's Wild West, a.k.a.: the internet.

...and remember... don't panic, it's organic! SEO Survivor
